In the June newsletter, Alison Drury, our chair of trustees, helpfully set out the rapidly changing context of Milton Keynes as the city looks toward doubling in size over the next 30 years. In reflecting on the last year, I am acutely aware of the impact that the scale of this change is having on the various strategic discussions within the churches, and so in my introduction to the Annual Report I wrote this: “At such a time, it is vital that we align as closely as possible around our common vision MK: a City Alive to God and engage wisely with the issues and the centres of power and decision making. Accordingly, much of the work this year has been the largely unseen activities of strategic thinking and engagement which may take some time to come to fruition. Key themes that are emerging from various discussions include:
- sustainability, both in relation to existing churches and new forms of church and the closely related question of intergenerational connectivity
- capacity building, particularly in terms of leadership and training
- the optimal form of church planting
- resourcing and its focus
- the methodology and focus of community engagement
- the changing nature of ecumenism”
I cannot stress strongly enough the importance of engaging in this discussion and the themes highlighted above. Nor should the need to align around the vision be underestimated. That is why our Assemblies are focussed around such things and our next Assembly will be no exception. We want you to be informed and to contribute to the debates.
This Assembly will be our AGM, so there will be a small amount of business to conduct and, in particular, this is the occasion at which we elect new Trustees. If you are considering standing as a Trustee and want to know more, please be in touch with Alison Drury or myself and download a nomination form from the website (here).
We look forward to seeing you there so that together we can shape the future and see MK: a City Alive to God.
